Terms such as cruelty free, vegan or COSMOS approved are now common place in cosmetics, but Halal Certified, perhaps less so...
With an upsurge in the Muslim population, combined with a projected 14% growth in the halal cosmetics market this year - maybe now is the time for it to take its place in the spotlight¹?
It's certainly how we feel at Alchemy Ingredients, which is why we’re proud to share that our entire product range is Halal Certified!
So, What Does Halal Mean?
The Arabic term ‘halal’ means ‘permissible’ and verifies whether a product, facility, or service complies with Islamic Shariah dietary laws and practices.
In the context of cosmetics, this refers to products that are free from ingredients forbidden in Islam – including pork derivatives, alcohol, or other haram materials.
The Rise in Halal Beauty
Halal beauty is rising and quite rapidly, too. With over 1.8 billion Muslims worldwide, the halal cosmetic market is one of the fastest growing beauty segments globally2. With market value predicted to reach $47 billion in 2025¹.
Many countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia and Saudi Arabia already actively promote halal beauty, spreading commercial expansion.
According to the Business Research Company, its not only the rising Muslim population that’s driving growth, but also:
- Heightened recognition and respect of halal customs.
- Increased globalisation, allowing brands to reach consumer groups across continents.
- Religious sensitivity as consumers expect brands to be transparent and align with halal values.
- Growing consumer demand for natural, ethical and sustainable products¹.
Due to the increased awareness of halal beauty through campaigns, social media and beauty blogs, it's spreading the word of halal standards and ingredient sincerity quickly around the world. Making us more connected than ever!
Unlocking Our Halal Certification
The Halal Certification process requires us to ensure that all materials being certified are free from contamination with non-halal substances during manufacturing, storage, and transportation.
No small feat! So we took a step-by-step approach...
The Step-By-Step Process
- Step 1: Raw Material Review – Our products were already compliant, but for certification we ensured that clear traceability was available and documented for all raw materials to demonstrate its compliance with Halal standards.
- Step 2: Process Review – Ensuring that all processes and systems have suitable controls to prevent any Haram materials coming into contact with our products.
- Step 3: Site Audit – To demonstrate our controls are effectively and consistently implemented.
- Step 4: Monitoring and Reviewing – an ongoing exercise to ensure we continue to meet the standards and ensure our products remain Halal Certified.
How our Practices Comply with the Certification's Requirements
- Ensuring everything is well documented! This includes tracing the origin of every ingredient and working closely with our suppliers to ensure they are documented.
- Utilising plant based raw materials such as glycerine, collagen, stearic acid.
- Adapting to evolving standards and criteria. The main change that we are expecting in terms of Halal cosmetics is the implementation of the certification in different countries, as the law of obtaining the Halal Certification to import products becomes a requirement.
The Takeaway
At Alchemy, we believe our ingredients should reflect consumer values – whether those are ethical, environmental or spiritual.
So we were thrilled to receive the Halal Certification for our entire product range last month!
Our Halal Certified range offers peace of mind, combining faith, ethics, and science to help create trustworthy, high-performance products to reach a wider audience.
